I'm sure that by now, most of you have seen on the news, the item listed... and the contraversy behind it.
A Chocolate Jesus that was supposed to be put on display in New York.
The clipping that I have found most recently fiollows...bear with me on this please...
"NEW YORK (AP) -- A planned Holy Week exhibition of a nude, anatomically correct chocolate sculpture of Jesus Christ was canceled Friday amid complaints from Catholics, including Cardinal Edward Egan. The "My Sweet Lord" display was shut down by the hotel that houses the Lab Gallery in Manhattan, said Matt Semler, the gallery's creative director. Semler said he resigned after officials at the Roger Smith Hotel shut down the show.
The artwork was created from more than 200 pounds of milk chocolate and features Christ with his arms outstretched as if on an invisible cross. Unlike the typical religious portrayal of Christ, the artwork does not include a loincloth.
[glow=red,2,300]The 6-foot sculpture was the victim of "a strong-arming from people who haven't seen the show, seen what we're doing[/glow]," Semler said. "They jumped to conclusions completely contrary to our intentions."
But word of the confectionary Christ infuriated Catholics, including Egan, who described it as "a sickening display." Bill Donohue, head of the watchdog Catholic League, said it was "one of the worst assaults on Christian sensibilities ever."
The hotel and the gallery were overrun Thursday with angry phone calls and e-mails. Semler said the calls included death threats over the work of artist Cosimo Cavallaro, who was described as disappointed by the decision to cancel the display.
So now I pose this question to you all...
Would you be/or are you offended by the sculpture in any way?
The guy was commisioned to come in and do this. Now that people are offended (specifically, Christians and the churches), he runs the risk of losing his artistic credibilty OR becoming man of the hour for all of the contravery that this has caused. I found his work amazing! The time and effort that went into this was something I just couldn't imagine. It's ART. Nothing more, nothing less. Michaelangelo created painting and sculptures of angels and so on...nudes more specifically and he is noted as one of the greatest of his time. The church wanted him to create his work and renditions of us in all of our glory...why should this man be condemned for doing the same thing? Is it becuase the chocolate insinuates / resembles a "Black Jesus?" Go figure.
I am not even remotely offended and want to know what you all think of this...it's all over the news and the internet...lokk and come back and tell me what you think.
Sorry this post was so long winded everyone!
"Food for thought!
